Honour and Glory, graded at 5.15a, is the second 5.15 in Canada, both of which are in the Bow Valley, but is the first 5.15 to be climbed by a Canadian. The route was bolted by Evan Hau in the Colosseum sector, located in the Eco Canyon, Canmore. Evan definitely had a vision bolting this line and put tremendous amount of work in order to create it. This is a great achievement, one that will definitely leave a mark in Canadian climbing history.
After Evan’s first assent I had the opportunity to take some photos of him climbing the route. This particular day was supposed to be mostly sunny but turned out to be mostly cloudy and, well, pretty chilly. Luckily, there were 2 fixed ropes set right along the route on both sides which made it easier for the photo session. The sky was completely overcast for our first session, resulting in even lighting but less dramatic images (see photo above). The other session was more exciting as the sun started to break through. This is exactly what I was looking for: if you time it well, the upper wall is all lit up by the sun while the ground is still in the shade. This creates a great contrast, naturally driving the viewer’s gaze to the climber .
